I really, REALLY need to stop submitting stuff this big....oi.
Anyways, after much asking, and in my spare ocopious time...and the inability to think of a comic for today......this came to be. I've already had this drawing of Rachel lying around, and I thought, why not. XD It was a quickie drawing...putting it together~ NOT so much -_-. Anyways, I hope everyone understands. I really do suck at explaining myself. Which is why I will NEVER be a teacher. lol. I'm more of those, I have to be with you to show you how I do it. Otherwise it's failure XD!
And I apologize for my Vic Mignogna/Travis Willingham reference. of the "Colonel Mustang is dead sexy..in a mini-skirt!" XD I've been listening to way too many panels on youtube lately~ :3 It's my remedy for lack of cons lately. lol.
I don't really agree with the idea of not using a pencil first, since I find it even more frustrating to be unable to fix any mistakes that may have been made. True, am inking mistake can be fixed in a program like photoshop, but I like showing off my sketches away from a computer, in which all mistakes that aren't digitally erased can be seen by other artists. And even if others don't notice the mistakes, you as the one who made the mistake would see it as painfully obvious.
But to each his own.
And a question! Do you have any tips to do digital lineart to those poor souls (ie: me) that don't have access to a tablet? I've tried to do line art with just a mouse, but it comes out choppy and not as clean as the original pencil art. :/

Nice tutorial! I've been meaning to get into digital illustration, but haven't really had much information on the how-to aspects of it; this tutorial will come in very handy!
If you draw the line art in Photoshop, that means that there is no "white" in your line art (as there would be if you had scanned in hand-drawn line art) and anything not black is transparent. So, really, if you move the line art to being the top layer and make new layers underneath it, you don't actually need to set all the base colors on Multiply, they can be on Normal. Then the base colors won't cover the line art, and you don't have to be perfect with "staying in the lines" where there are overlapping base colors. To me, that just kinda seems easier to do than what you suggested in the tutorial. (For anybody interested: if you have scanned line art, all you have to do is copy the layer with Ctrl+J, and set the line art layer to Multiply with a white bg layer underneath it. Then you can see the colors underneath the line art layer.)
Also, here's how to use the Magic Wand and not get "jaggedy white edges": A) Be in the line art layer. Select all the areas that are the same base color (holding down Shift with Magic Wand makes it possible to select additional areas, Alt will subtract an area). B) Switch to to a new, blank layer. C) Go to "Select" in the top menu bar, scroll down to "Modify", and then hit "Expand". Make the expansion 1-3 pixels, depending. (If the expansion is too small, one can always undo the next step and come back to this one and expand more.) D) Click the Paint Bucket tool (it is the other tool on the default Gradient button (right click on the button to switch between Gradient and Paint Bucket)) and then (assuming you have the correct color set) click inside any one of the selected areas. Viola! Instant base color fill on a separate layer with no showing of white space/jagged edges.
And... pen makes me cry. I personally find it much more annoying to not be able to fix mistakes than it is to be erasing and fixing until I think it looks good. But to each his/her own on that standpoint. (THANK GOD FOR FIREFOX'S RESTORE SESSION OPTION WHEN MY CRAPPY COMP MAKES FIREFOX DIE UNEXPECTEDLY.)
Nice tutorial. I'm sure this will help a lot of people with their own art. Plus it's always interesting to see how another artist does their work.
